Zora Steenson

Zora M. Steenson and Hughberta Steenson

Born in South Dakota, Zora in 1904 and Hughberta in 1908, the sisters lived in the upper Midwest, primarily in Minneapolis, until the conclusion of the Second World War. Both artists, they moved to Los Angeles where they studied at the Choinard Institute and produced a remarkable body of paintings, drawings and mixed media art. Zora was a well recognized artist in the vibrant LA art scene of the 1950s and '60s. Both Zora and Hughberta were independent women, providing for their livelihood through their art. In 1979, the sisters moved to Washington State near their closest relative, their nephew, Robert. Hughberta passed away in 1998, Zora in 2001, both in Tacoma, Washington.
